![]() Having already a set a course of constant musical change, it was in the next years that the Grateful Dead would begin to blossom both onstage and in the studio. Signing to Warner Brothers in late 1966, they released their self-titled debut later that spring, consisting mostly of cover songs, with only one extended jam. A collaborative tool for the Grateful Dead, psychedelics were an ingrained part of the band’s mythos, occasionally (but only occasionally) to their chagrin. ![]() As the band settled in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury, acid simultaneously became both illegal and a global trend, symbolically if not always literally. The newly christened Grateful Dead found an unusual and appropriate patron in psychedelic chemist and sound engineer Augustus Owsley Stanley III, known as Bear, whose profits sustained them as they began to write their own songs and hone their conversational playing style in 1966. Appearing in many cultures, it is a folktale in which the protagonist resolves the debt of a deceased stranger, and later receives karmic repayment from their spirit incarnate: the Grateful Dead.ĭebuting with their new name at the first public Acid Test thrown by author Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters in December 1965, the relationship cemented the band’s part in the multidisciplinary Bay Area arts scene starting to flourish around the use of still-legal LSD. They debuted in May of 1965 and quickly drafted in Garcia’s friend, the lapsed experimental composer Phil Lesh (bass, vocals).ĭiscovering a single by another band called the Warlocks-most likely a Massachusetts garage rock quintet-the now-former California Warlocks resorted to stoned bibliomancy for their new name, picking “Grateful Dead” at random out of a dictionary. Fronted by Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (organ, vocals, harmonic, and later percussion), the blues enthusiast who’d urged them to go electric, the new band also included Garcia’s occasional substitute teacher Bob Weir (guitar, vocals) along with Bill Kreutzmann (drums, percussion). Assembling a jug band with his coworkers at the Menlo Park music store where he taught, the happily sloppy Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions plugged in and transformed into the Warlocks by 1965. Creating an artistic ecosystem all their own, the Grateful Dead would transform American music and arguably even America itself.Īfter a comically disastrous stint in the Army and discharge in late 1960, Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals) had spent an intense four years immersed in traditional American music, turning himself into a virtuoso acoustic guitarist and banjoist. ![]() ![]() Never playing the same setlist twice (except that once), the Dead’s musical legacy remains unfathomably rich, spread across a combined body of live and studio recordings. Emerging as a vessel for a vibrant global counterculture, they would create an unparalleled original songbook through 30 years of recording and touring. Fusing rock and roll, folk, and jazz with avant-garde, visual, and literary traditions-and virtually inventing a new way to play music in the process-they became one of the most popular, enduring, and influential bands in American history. Formed as a quintet in California in 1965, the Grateful Dead became as much a folktale as the story from which they drew their name.

One way to describe Georgia is that it is similar to Times New Roman but is taller and bolder. And the typeface is darker, which makes it easy to read even at smaller sizes. The lower case letters in Georgia are a bit taller than some other fonts. The type has a slightly formal look because of the varied stroke weights throughout. However, they are not so swirly that they’re hard to read. This creates a continuous look throughout the text. If you’ve studied calligraphy, then this font might look slightly familiar because the letters blend one to the next. It is slightly italic looking, but not quite as slanted. Georgia has strokes that are both thick and thin, switching back and forth between the two. Everyone on the team could easily work on the same design without it being skewed on different platforms. People began to see the many different applications for the font. The font was compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, and because the font looked the same on both systems, it became popular with designers. It then came as a supplemental pack of fonts. The initial release of Georgia was bundled in the core fonts for Web. The addition of serifs makes the font suited both for headlines and body text. Georgia fits that bill because it creates an interesting typeface that is still legible and easy to read. The Internet was growing by leaps and bounds in the early 90s, so there was a real need for fonts that would look good even at low resolutions and in smaller sizes. Such regal beginnings inspired Carter in his own work with typefaces. Where did the name “Georgia” come from? It’s said that the idea for the typeface name came from a headline at the time: “Alien Heads found in Georgia.” Carter’s father was a British historian of typography, even working for Her Majesty’s Stationery Office and University Press at Oxford. The history of the font is inspired by Scotch Roman designs from the 1800s, and it came to life in 1993, thanks to Matthew Carter. Like other serif designs, Georgia has a formalness to it - but it stays readable on a variety of screen sizes. It’s a versatile typeface that works well with text that will display on a screen. Taking a look at the history of the font and the ways other designers have used the font, though, can make a huge difference. It can feel a bit overwhelming trying to figure out which one works best for which project. If you search for fonts on any typeface site, you’ll find thousands and thousands of fonts available. ![]() This convenience saves time on lesson planning and preparation. The radius of an anion is greater than the parent atom. These worksheets are an educational tool designed to help students understand and explore the elements of the periodic table. Therefore, the pull of the protons on each electron is lower. Anions have a greater number of electrons than protons. An anion is formed from the gain of electrons. A cation has more protons than electrons and therefore the protons have a large pull on each electron. The formation of a cation is due to the loss of electrons. As radius increases down a group, these properties decrease as the electrons are farther from the nucleus. As radius decreases across the periodic table, all of these properties increase as the electrons are closer to the pull of the protons. Therefore, as you move down the periodic table, atomic radius increases.Įlectron affinity (the ease with which an electron is added), electronegativity (pull an electron has on electrons it shares in a bond) and ionization energy (difficulty in removing the outermost electron) are all related to the radius. This new valence shell is shielded from the pull of the protons by all the inner valence shells. But this time, the electrons are added in a completely new valence shell. When moving down the periodic table, protons are again added. Therefore, when moving across the periodic table, the radius decreases. This increase in both the number of positive charges and negative charges increases the attraction between the two. Moving across the periodic table, protons are added to the nucleus while electrons are added to the valence shell. This increases the mass of the elements both across and down the periodic table. ![]() ![]() Anti-contraceptive advocates can no longer rely on the tacit agreement that contraception leads to illicit sex, loose women, and over-stimulated young men. Today, however, considerable social acceptance of sex for pleasure (at least for some people in some circumstances) means that straightforward arguments against contraception based on its immorality do not resonate as successfully as they once did. These beliefs undergirded the federal Comstock Act, which banned the distribution of contraception and information regarding contraception, as well as state-level mini-Comstock laws in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These Comstock crusaders believed that illicit sexual acts, including non-procreative sex facilitated by contraception, were immoral and this immorality was the cause of illness and harm to women. In fact, the modern claims that “contraception harms women” and “contraception is abortion” are modes of reasoning consciously modeled on the claims of nineteenth century anti-contraception crusaders. These claims circulated in anticipation of challenges to the contraceptive coverage requirement in the Affordable Care Act and were submitted before the Supreme Court in the Hobby Lobby litigation in the form of an amicus brief filed on behalf of a group called “Women Speak for Themselves.” Although these claims garnered significant attention recently during the Hobby Lobby litigation, in fact, the claims that contraceptives are bad for health and are morally equivalent to abortion have a long pedigree. The two arguments are: (1) that contraceptives are bad for women’s health, and (2) that many hormonal contraceptives are actually abortifacients that terminate pregnancy because, it is argued, they could prevent a fertilized egg from implanting into a woman’s uterine lining. This Article interrogates two critiques of hormonal contraceptives to reveal that both critiques are animated by moral arguments against all non-procreative sex dressed up in faulty scientific reasoning. ![]() ![]() While contemporary readers should be wary of this narrative’s medicalization of women’s bodies, the comic book’s subtle representation of expanded female autonomy and authority also signals how women’s health organizations might consider advancing feminist politics in a contemporary conservative era. In this case study, I contend that this Planned Parenthood comic book uses a generically familiar romance narrative in ways appealing to conservative readers and situating birth control as a normative part of the ideal American. In light of recent criticism targeting Planned Parenthood, this essay turns to Planned Parenthood’s 1956 comic book, Escape from Fear, as a rich historical text for considering the implications underlying the negotiation of ideological positions in the context of an increasingly conservative society. |
